Supporting Bright Minds Through Life’s Challenges

Bright children, teens, and young adults often face unique emotional and social challenges. High intelligence can come with intense emotions, perfectionism, and difficulty finding peers who understand them. We provide counseling that recognizes these distinctive experiences while helping individuals and families navigate the challenges they face.

Who We Work With

Children

Bright children can struggle with having very high expectations of themselves, thinking they should be good at everything. They may become unusually anxious or ashamed about the mistakes they make. We help children understand their emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, and build resilience.

Teens

Adolescence is challenging for anyone, but gifted teens often experience additional struggles with identity, peer relationships, and the pressure of high expectations. We provide a safe space for teens to explore who they are, manage stress and anxiety, and develop skills for emotional well-being.

Young Adults

The transition to independence can be particularly difficult for bright young adults. We help with managing anxiety and depression, developing healthy relationships, navigating career decisions, and building the life skills needed for successful adulthood.

Parents and Families

Parenting a bright or twice-exceptional child presents unique challenges especially if there is more than one child. We offer parent counseling to help your family work better, that might include improved communication, understand each others needs, and develop strategies that work for your unique family dynamic.

Common Concerns We Address

Perfectionism and High Expectations

Gifted individuals often set impossibly high standards for themselves and feel deep shame or anxiety when they don’t meet them. People may tell them they “take things too seriously” or “should just let it go, relax.” We help clients develop healthier perspectives and learn to embrace mistakes as part of learning and growth.

Anxiety and Worry

Bright minds can also mean minds that worry intensely. We help children and adults manage anxiety, develop coping strategies, and find peace amid the intensity of their thoughts and emotions.

Social Difficulties and Loneliness

Finding peers who understand can be challenging for gifted individuals. We address social skills, help process feelings of loneliness or being different, and support clients in building meaningful connections.

Emotional Intensity

Gifted people often experience emotions more intensely than others. We help clients understand and manage their emotional responses, whether that’s anger, frustration, sadness, or overwhelming joy.

Underachievement and Motivation

Sometimes bright individuals struggle to accomplish what they’re capable of. As one person put it: “if I’m so smart, why do I do so many stupid things?” We help clients move out of immobilization and develop strategies for following through on their goals.

Twice-Exceptional Challenges

Being both gifted and having a learning difference, ADHD, autism, or other neurodivergent traits creates a unique set of challenges. We have particular expertise in supporting twice-exceptional individuals.

Our Counseling Approach

We don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Every person is unique, and our counseling is tailored to your individual needs, strengths, and challenges.

Personal Connection

The same practitioner you meet with initially will be the one you continue working with throughout your counseling. We believe this continuity builds trust and allows for deeper, more effective therapeutic work.

Understanding the Whole Person

We take time to understand not just the presenting problem, but the whole person—their strengths, their weaknesses, their experiences, and their goals. Counseling isn’t just about reducing symptoms; it’s about helping you make your life work better. Our goal is to live a more fulfilling life.

Strength-Based Focus

We help you identify your strengths so you can live out of them, and see your challenges clearly so you can accommodate for them. The goal is to move forward without the heavy baggage of negative experiences.

Evidence-Based Techniques

We use proven therapeutic approaches tailored to the unique needs of gifted and neurodivergent individuals. Our extensive training and experience allows us to discern the interaction between high cognition and emotional problems.

Individual Counseling

One-on-one counseling provides a safe, confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. We work collaboratively with you to develop strategies, build skills, and create lasting change.

Sessions are typically 50-60 minutes and scheduled weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your needs. Sometimes children work better with half hour sessions or the spacing may be different depending on what they need.

You are in Control

We understand that different situations call for different approaches to counseling. Some people need and want deeper work with long-term change—staying engaged over time to develop new skills, understand patterns, and make fundamental shifts in how they approach life. This is like learning to fish: we’re not just solving today’s problem, we’re teaching skills and understanding what makes things work well for you, making you more capable over time.

Other people benefit from focused, problem-specific work. Many times, especially with adolescents and college students, people will reach out when there is a problem and work with us until it’s resolved. Then we might stop for a while. A few months later, you might text saying you’re struggling again—maybe you broke up with your boyfriend, you’re having academic difficulties, or you’re back on the struggle bus—and we’ll pick up and work on that together. Think of us like a family doctor you come back to when you need help.

We know some people worry about becoming dependent on a therapist. We want you to know that you’re in control of how you use our services. Whether you want ongoing weekly sessions for deeper development or periodic check-ins when specific challenges arise, we’ll work with you in whatever way serves you best.

Parent and Family Coaching

Parenting a bright or twice-exceptional child presents unique challenges, especially if there is more than one child in the family. We offer parent counseling to help your family work better. That might include improving communication, understanding each other’s needs, and developing strategies that work for your unique family dynamic.

Family counseling helps improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships. We work with the whole family system to create an environment where everyone can thrive.

Family counseling is particularly helpful when:

  • There’s tension around expectations and achievement
  • Siblings struggle to understand each other’s differences
  • Parents disagree on approaches to parenting a gifted child
  • The family needs help navigating educational decisions
  • Communication has broken down
  • You’re trying to balance the needs of multiple bright children with different strengths and challenges
